Islamic Chamber speaks on behalf of the Private Sector at the 2nd High Level United Nations Conference on South-South Cooperation - (Buenos Aires Plan of Action (BAPA+40) held in Buenos Aires on 20th to 22nd March 2019

The Islamic Chamber of Commerce, Industry & Agriculture (ICCIA) represented the Private Sector at the 2nd High Level United Nations Conference on South-South Cooperation – (Buenos Aires Plan of Action (BAPA+40) held in Buenos Aires on 20th to 22nd March 2019 and was given the single honor to make a statement on behalf of the Private Sector in the Opening Session.

The Opening Session was attended by H.E. Mauricio Macri, President of the Argentina Republic and of the Conference, H.E. Maria Fernanda Espinosa Garcdes, President of the General Assembly, H.E. Antonio Guterres, Secretary General of the United Nations and Mr. Achim Steiner, Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme. In addition, the Head of States and Ministers of several countries were also present.
The Islamic Chamber emphasized in its statement the role of private sector as the engine of growth, playing a vital role in the overall global economic agenda. The statement also highlighted the engagement of the private sector in the development agendas of many international organizations, which reflects the impact of the private sector as a driver of sustainable and inclusive economic growth, job creation and poverty alleviation. The statement further stated the need to support developing countries through South-South and Triangular Cooperation for strengthening the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and creating an enabling environment for sustainable industrialization. It called for the private sector needs to be involved in public private dialogue at the level of policy formulation. It further underlined the need to establish a framework to understand the need of the private sector in the global south and to boost the potentials of the private sector as a driver of sustainable development.
The advantage the ICCIA got by attending the Conference was that it was selected as a representative of the entire Private Sector of the Global South, to make a statement on behalf of the Private Sector in the Inaugural Session of the Conference. This selection showed that the activities of the ICCIA were acknowledged at such an International Platform.
The final outcome highlighted, the serious challenges, the developing countries face and recognized the need to enhance capacity building in developing countries through enhanced resources and expertise. In that respect, they also recognized that the shortage of resources continues to hinder the expansion of South-South and triangular cooperation, and underscored the need to further mobilize resources from all sources — public, private, domestic and international.

About the Conference:

It maybe mentioned that in 1978 the Buenos Aires Plan of Action (BAPA) for promoting and implementing technical cooperation among developing countries, was adopted at the United Nations Conference on Technical Cooperation among Developing Countries (TCDC). The TCDC working under UNDP, because of its expansion and scope of work then became the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC).
The aim of this Plan of Action was to provide the countries of the South a framework to reinforce their
cooperation among themselves and with others with a view for collective self-reliance, which would help them achieve their development goals and to reduce poverty through mutual assistance and solidarity.
The Meeting which is now called BAPA+40 signifies 40 years of its existence has given the international community the opportunity to review trends, assess progress till date, review lessons learnt and at the same time identify new opportunities to achieve 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and other internationally agreed agenda.

The Islamic Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture is an international organization affiliated to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). It represents the private sector of 57 Member Islamic. It aims at strengthening closer collaboration in the field of trade, commerce, information technology, promotion of investment opportunities and joint ventures in the Member countries. The Islamic Chamber of Commerce, Industry & Agriculture (ICCIA) was established upon the resolution of the 7th Islamic Conference of Foreign Ministers held in May 1976 in Istanbul-Turkey, which was approved by the First Conference of the Chambers of Commerce and Industry held in October 1977 in Istanbul. Its constitution was adopted by the Second Conference of Chambers of Commerce and Industry held in December 1978 in Karachi -Its Headquarters is located in Karachi, the economic capital of the Republic of Pakistan
