Islamic Chamber Organizes a Side Event Titled “The Role of OIC Institutions for the Promotion of
South-South Cooperation among 57 Member Countries”
On the Sidelines of the 2nd High Level United Nations Conference on South-South Cooperation, the Islamic Chamber organized a Side-Event titled “The Role of OIC Institutions for the Promotion of South-South Cooperation among 57 Member Countries” on March 19 in Buenos Aires.
The objective of the event was introducing the activities of OIC Institutions in the promotion of South South Cooperation and reviewing the trends in South-South and Triangular Cooperation in OIC Region. At the same time, it presented the progress that is made by the international entities supporting and promoting South-South Cooperation, to identify new partnerships and learn best practices.
ICCIA mentioned the activities it offers to its member chambers for creating a stronger partnership between the member countries, through the member chambers and the private sector.
Furthermore, it underlined the close cooperation it has with the United Nations Office of South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC)since 2005 as per the signed MOU. Through this cooperation, ICCIA has held several training programs and workshops through PGTF fund, for the member chambers. These activities were about Capacity Building, Entrepreneurship Development, Microfinance, Value-Addition in Agribusiness, SME Development and Development of Incubation Centers and Green Economy.
ICCIA invited for its Side-Event, Mr. Jorge Chediek, Director of the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC) and Special Envoy of the Secretary-General on South-South Cooperation who underlined the significance of OIC, ICCIA and UNOSSC Cooperation and the importance of South-South Cooperation. Other invited speakers were Dr. Abdelhakim Elwaer, Advisor the President at Islamic Development Bank (IDB), Mr. Onur Çağlar, Representative of Statistical, Economic and Social Research & Training Centre for Islamic Countries (SESRIC) and Mr. Edem Bakhshish, representing the United Nations Office for SouthSouth Cooperation (UNOSSC) for Arab and CIS States.
The event gave OIC and its institutions an opportunity to give greater visibility to programs on South-South and Triangular Cooperation.

About the Conference:
The Buenos Aires Plan of Action (BAPA) for promoting and implementing technical cooperation among developing countries was adopted at the United Nations Conference on Technical Cooperation among Developing Countries (TCDC) in 1978. The TCDC working under UNDP, because of its expansion and scope of work then became the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC).
The aim of this Plan of Action was giving the countries of the South a framework to reinforce their cooperation among themselves and others with collective self-reliance, which would help them achieve their development goals and reduce poverty through mutual assistance and solidarity.
The Meeting which is now called BAPA+40 signifies 40 years of its existence, has given the international
community the opportunity to review trends, assess progress till date, review lessons learnt and at the same time identify new opportunities to achieve 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and other internationally agreed agenda.
